Much research is being done to try and find a treatment or cure for FIP. A recent study was conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of the nucleoside analog GS-441524 for cats suffering from FIP. The study included 31 cats and the results were published in February 2019.

The researchers concluded “The results obtained for the 31 cats treated with GS-441524 exceeded expectations and indicate that FIP, regardless of signalment or disease form, is a treatable disease using nucleoside analogs. The study design and treatment parameters determined from this limited field trial will be essential for future efforts in the commercialization of this or similar drugs against FIP.”
